NORTHEAST QUEENS MULTICULTURAL DEMOCRATIC CLUB CELEBRATES ITS 3RD HOLIDAY FESTIVAL WITH AWARDS

Queens, NY.- On Thursday, December 20th members of the Northeast Queens Multicultural Democratic Club and newly elected Congresswoman Grace Meng, celebrated their third annual holiday festival.

The event took place at the Gallery room of the Sheraton La Guardia East Hotel, where three honorees received awards, either for appreciation or community service. Don Capalbi, President of the Queensboro Hill Neighborhood Association and Community Liaison for Grace Meng, received the Community Service Award.

Both Ida Green, membership secretary of the N. Q. M. D. C. and Michael Olmeda, Political Consultant, who for more than 20 years served as a Field Director for the NYS Senate,    received appreciation awards in a small, but cozy ceremony where camaraderie and friendship could be felt in the atmosphere. About 100 persons attended the event and enjoyed each other´s company, a delicious buffet and a little dance afterwards.

Northeast Queens Multicultural Democratic Club is about ethnic diversity and leadership.

Most of the folks here represent the Latino community in the Democratic Club. 'DOGGY BE GOOD' RAISES FUNDS TO BENEFIT ST. JUDE CHILDREN HOSPITAL AND ANIMAL RESCUE

Queens, NY.- On Saturday, December 15th, Chihuahuas, Bull dogs, Golden Retrievers and many more breeds went to the 'Doggy Be Good' facilities bringing along their owners to celebrate Christmas in advance, in a special event to help raise funds in benefit of St. Jude Children Hospital and Animal Rescue.

The annual event was organized by 'Doggy Be Good' partners Anna Arteaga and Michael DiMarco, who asked pet owners to bring either an unwrapped gift for a child to be donated to 'Toys for Tots' or a non-perishable food item to help feed the hungry.

Visitors and their pets were able to take pictures with Santa Claus and enjoyed hot chocolate, snacks and food donated by Sal's Pizza, all in exchange for a small donation, with all the proceeds going to the above mentioned non-profits.

MaryAnn, here holding Diesel, her 5 month Cani Corso Italian Mastiff, bought $20 dollars worth of tickets for the raffle. "Let's see if luck is on my side", said the good hearted lady. We see her in the picture with Megan, holding both Haley, the Chihuahua and  Cooper, the motif and John.

Students from Martin Van Buren High School and John Browne High School volunteered at the food stand, the raffle table and receiving the toys or the non-perishable food items from guests arriving to the event.

The raffle tickets cost only $1.00 and gave any ticket holder the opportunity to win a wide variety of prizes such as a hand made afgan, pizza pies, dinner for two or 5 free zumba classes, pet holiday gift baskets and Murray Feiss Lamps among many other items.

  Pets and owners did enjoy the heat coming from the bonfire.

 Father Mark Swartvagher from the Brooklyn Diocesis gave 

an eulogy in honor of the victims of the Newtown elementary

 school shooting, for whom he asked a silent prayer and then he 
blessed animals at the fundraising, like Kasey, the Golden Retriever.

was the first thing visitors noticed at the entrance of the facility.

Queens, NY.- On thursday, December the 13th, there was an art exhibition at the Diego Salazar Art Gallery, where 14 artists presented their work, many of which were images of a Long Island City that no longer exists: the Power Plant at 5th St. and 51st Ave. with its original stacks, which is now a luxury apartment building, and the old Gantries before they were polished up and became focal points for the waterside park.


Some of these artists found inspiration in the more industrial Long Island City, which is fast disappearing. You could find people in some of the paintings doing ordinary things; other paintings encompassed strange inward realities that are often expressed symbolically.

Photos of crashed cars and torn billboards eyeing us mysteriously, hanging cloth paintings on draped cloth with sewing machine stitching drawing us into the pirate’s lair, and a couple of white porcelain sea creatures that confound the imagination engage us further and energize the rooms, they were also part of this art exhibition.
